All good things must come to an end

Dear Friends,

Unitarian Kaláka conducted its final fundraising campaign in 2018. Several of us traveled to Transylvania in 2019 to visit friends and project sites and the good news is, Unitarian Kaláka initiatives have had a lasting, positive impact in a dozen or more Unitarian Transylvanian villages. However, we also recognize that today, there are many more sources of grant funding available to communities than there were when we began our efforts back in 2015, and years earlier through our predecessor organization, Project Harvest Hope. Our small contributions, while valued, are less critical than they once were. We have decided to bring Unitarian Kaláka to a close.

Perhaps our most important contribution, in partnership with the Szekelyudvarhely Community Foundation (SzKA) in Transylvania, has been to help communities organize themselves to become NGOs, capable of applying for grants, and following through with implementation and documentation. The UU Partner Church Council, Project Harvest Hope, and Unitarian Kaláka, in partnership with SzKA and other organizations in Transylvania, all helped empower villagers to join together in volunteer efforts, or kalákas, to realize their community visions.

We are very grateful for the support Unitarian Kaláka has received over the years, enabling us to continue meaningful work with people we care about.

Thank you,

Ann Swardlick and Marge Titcomb
